Our first big construction project was a village hammam (bath house) in Tijhza, Morocco. Villagers, volunteers and donors all worked together to make the hammam functional and now it is providing much needed income and employment for the village whilst providing a sanitation facility that is lacking in most village homes.
Francis and Priscilla
In the early days of Baraka’s operations in Zambia we discovered these two bright kids in a rural village living in poverty with no educational future ahead of them. Francis is now at University training to be a teacher and Priscilla is already qualified and teaching in a Baraka school. We are immensely proud of these two inspirational youngsters.
In Zambia we have been running a health outreach programme since 2016. Our local team of volunteers visit schools with a puppet show that highlights simple but vital health messages that can often be life saving. The show has reached over 20,000 children so far and as well as being educational it is a lot of fun.
This school in Zambia was struggling to survive when it was brought to our attention. Over the years every investment we have made in the school has been grasped with eager hands and improved upon. The school is pro-active at making itself a community and learning centre and is the most pristine and beautiful of all our Zambian schools with over 200 happy and well educated kids.
Laos book boats We stumbled across the book boats in the early days of our Laos operations. They were struggling for funding so we stepped in and expanded the programme. This is a fantastic initiative that reaches thousands of kids every year. The sight of very excited kids running down to the water’s edge to meet the boats is joyous. The programme is educational, fun, health related and hands out books, pens, soaps and dental products.
