What to expect on a Baraka volunteer trip

The work you get involved with may be of an unskilled manual nature, or it may be more skilled, depending on your area of expertise. Work includes teaching IT to our team or pupils, helping with our expanding agriculture programme, or teaching children to read. You will also have time to get to know our teams and our beneficiaries.

Arrive, recover, transfer to our projects, meet our teams, and learn about our projects.

Days 1-2

Volunteer work on a variety of projects at our different programmes, including digging foundations, painting classrooms, planting trees, improving landscaping, and maybe teaching children.

Days 3-7

Change locations and maybe visit some Baraka-supported schools for more volunteer work.

Days 7-8

The holiday part of the holiday! Unwind and see a bit of the beautiful country… a safari, or visit iconic sites such as Victoria Falls.

Days 8-12

  • My first volunteer trip to Morocco 2011, I knew nothing about the charity, but working hands on, alongside the local people saw how it is a true partnership with the community. Trips to Zambia and Laos the following year only reinforced that. In this environment, you see the country and people for real. Return trips to Zambia and Morocco, in addition to renewing friendships, I have seen amazing progression in the projects undertaken. I have made long-lasting friendships, especially in Zambia - many continuing from my first trip there. I have seen shy, sponsored school students, grow in confidence and graduate from university with Baraka's ongoing support. Many are now working in managerial roles for Baraka Zambia. Visiting such stunning places, I have so many memories to last a lifetime.

    Jos Wickett, Volunteer

    Giulia Chini, Baraka Volunteer

  • "Volunteering for Baraka gave me a different outlook on things. I value the fact that every penny donated is spent in either Zambia or Laos."

    Sheila Owens, Supporter and volunteer

  • "Laos was my first trip with Baraka. it is hard to put into words the heartwarming feeling of helping with the projects, creating new bonds and learning new things about others and myself. all wrapped up in one of the most beautiful countries i have ever seen."

    Claudio Bassi, Baraka volunteer

  • "Volunteering with Baraka provides an outstanding feeling of fulfilment. We are fortunate to be part of the vision of Baraka Canada allowing us to share our medical knowledge with our Zambian friends."

  • "Baraka is a collaboration between on-the-ground staff in Zambia and volunteers and donors in the UK, Canada and beyond. Using our skills and experience to identify important areas of need, we channel our resources into projects that foster long-term sustainability and community development."
