Medical initiatives made possible by baraka canada
Medical Missions
Since its founding, Baraka Canada has led six medical missions to Zambia, establishing temporary day clinics in communities including Lusaka, Kapiri Mposhi, and Maamba. Together, these clinics have provided care to nearly 10,000 patients and dealt with a multitude of ailments. During the most recent trip in May 2025, patients received B12 injections, ultrasounds, ear care, vision services, and general health assessments, while essential prescription medications were dispensed through a temporary pharmacy stocked with supplies from Canada. The team has treated a wide range of conditions, from malaria and HIV to intestinal parasites, infectious diseases, and serious injuries.
Our medical teams are made up of approximately 15 volunteers from the community of White Rock, British Columbia, including physicians, nurses, and non-medical support staff. At each clinic, they work alongside dedicated Zambian team members who serve as drivers, organizers, translators, and medical assistants. Many of these local partners are also participants in our sponsored student program, gaining valuable skills, mentorship, and hands-on experience while working beside Canadian health professionals.
Since 2019, most clinics have operated from Baraka’s Learning Centre in Kapiri Mposhi, while outreach teams continue travelling into surrounding rural villages to reach people who would otherwise have little or no access to medical services.
Every volunteer covers their own travel costs and commits to six months of fundraising before departure. Through these shared efforts, meaningful relationships have formed between Canadian and Zambian volunteers, and Baraka has proudly supported a growing number of local nurses and doctors as they pursue and complete their medical training.
Baraka Canada
Baraka Canada was founded in 2013 by longtime members of the Baraka UK board who shared a commitment to expanding access to health care in Zambia. What began as biannual medical outreach trips to rural communities with limited access to care has grown into a broader mission that now includes educational support, school construction, and participation in Baraka’s sponsored student program.
Over the last ten years, Baraka Canada has broadened its scope beyond medicine. As well as sending out teams of doctors and nurses to Zambia on a biennial basis, we have become increasingly involved in fundraising activities, working with sponsored children, and providing financial aid for a learning centre and other educational projects in Zambia. With the support of a small group of Canadian ladies, we are also now focusing our efforts on funding the New Dawn Safe House in Maamba for vulnerable teenage girls. For the time being, our efforts are focused exclusively on Zambia.
Thanks to a generous Canadian donor, every penny or cent donated to us impacts the children and families in Zambia with no administration or other costs taken out. One of the many aspects of our small charity is that it means we can punch far above our weight as an NGO.
